Conversare – experiencing of F2F conversation and some ideas on why this matters

Are you consciously aware of what it takes to be a competent conversationalist?

And why this is important in the ways you relate to others, and  to yourself?

If you are,  how did you come to this awareness? From your parents or other relatives or friends?

I suggest that there are few means in our modern education system through we which we learn the skills – and associated awareness – of relating well to others.

With the starting point of ‘We have a responsibility to treat each other well’.

Conversare events – as you would likely appreciate if you have been following the ideas here – are social gatherings specifically designed to provide the opportunity to experience having E2F conversations in contexts in which everybody present does this.

With two components which are not usually part of social events. One is that these events are hosted by a person who is skilled in welcoming everyone present and in providing a few clear guidelines on the procedures, such as “What can happen when we have in mind that we are here to give rather than get?” And “Do you appreciate what a remarkable privilege it is to be able to participate in this ‘once in a lifetime’ opportunity to be in this particular company of lively spirits’?

The second difference is that all present engage in conversation mainly with one person who is a stranger. Someone you have not met previously.

Here is another set of guidelines you may find helpful in coming to understand how to act when in conversation with others who you do or do not know.

They are on listening, quite basic and yet critically important whenever you are interacting with others. These I have recently received from a person who was an associate when I was living happily in Hong Kong for six years until quite recently.

And here is something which has just come to my attention as a remarkable reminder. I wonder if it resonates with you too?
